Well, Linux like Windows, has evolved over the years. When I first started
w
Linux in 1996, I encountered the same sorts of issues you did.
Indeed. I first played with Corell Linux and my latest was with the
Fedora kernel. Definetely a difference. I tried various other
distros, with various results. Some would not finish installing for
love or money. Others would not find certain hardware.
Everything on my desktop these days just works. iPod just works, digital
cam
just works, scanner just works. Want to burn a CD? Drop the files onto
the C
icon. Want to create MP3s? Drag and drop the songs from a CD to a directory.
Never was able to burn a cd , although I had a burner on that system.
But I still have the power of Linux under the hood, which is what an ol'
programmer like me needs. If I don't like something in GoldED, for example,
just edit the source, and type "make; make install". To install files,
I eit
use the gui, or type "apt-get install ..." from the command line, which
searches the 10,000+ program repository, grabs the program, and automagicall
installs it for me.
If somebody told me the command lines, it usually worked, but of
course not always the way I expected it to <G>

i still think w2k sp2 is the most stable windows. xp seems to have
fixed the bsod by just spontaneously rebooting instead. hasn't happend
on my machine, but i've been on xp boxes where it has. having said that
i don't use explorer as a shell, i use the xoblite variant of blackbox
instead. saves ram, makes xp more stable. eliminates the taskbar and
icons (which i never used under windows anyway). this is a screenshot
of the main vc on my xp desktop: http://tinyurl.com/738wv
Have one machine that has done the spontaneous reboot. So where do
you get the xoblite??

Indeed. I first played with Corell Linux
If Corell's Linux distro then was of the same quality as their current
attempt at an office suite, your unhappy experience is completely
understandable.
