Well, Linux like Windows, has evolved over the years. When I first started
wLinux in 1996, I encountered the same sorts of issues you did.
Indeed. I first played with Corell Linux and my latest was with theFedora kernel. Definetely a difference. I tried various other
distros, with various results. Some would not finish installing for
love or money. Others would not find certain hardware.
Everything on my desktop these days just works. iPod just works, digital
camjust works, scanner just works. Want to burn a CD? Drop the files onto
the Cicon. Want to create MP3s? Drag and drop the songs from a CD to a directory.
Never was able to burn a cd , although I had a burner on that system. But I still have the power of Linux under the hood, which is what an ol'
programmer like me needs. If I don't like something in GoldED, for example,
just edit the source, and type "make; make install". To install files,
I eitprogrammer like me needs. If I don't like something in GoldED, for example,
just edit the source, and type "make; make install". To install files,
use the gui, or type "apt-get install ..." from the command line, which
searches the 10,000+ program repository, grabs the program, and automagicall
installs it for me.
If somebody told me the command lines, it usually worked, but ofsearches the 10,000+ program repository, grabs the program, and automagicall
installs it for me.
course not always the way I expected it to <G>
